Bruno Fernandes is reportedly expected to remain at Manchester United, despite rumours of a summer move to Bayern Munich.

The 29-year-old, who joined the Red Devils back in January 2020, was named club captain by Erik ten Hag last summer and he has been one of their most important players during a turbulent 2023-24 campaign.

The Independent have reported that Bundesliga giants Bayern are interested in pursuing a move for Fernandes during the upcoming summer transfer window, following speculation that the Portugal star could be sold amid Man Utd’s new INEOS era.

However, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has now quashed links of a summer switch. As per the transfer expert, Fernandes held talks with Man Utd’s leadership team last week, with his future the topic of discussion.

According to Ornstein, Man Utd representatives were quick to reiterate the fact that Fernandes is deemed a vital player at Old Trafford and it was outlined that the squad would be built around the 29-year-old.

Bruno Fernandes to stay at Man Utd next season

Following the lengthy conversation, Fernandes is now strongly expected to stay at Man Utd this summer, despite interest from Bayern, although he will be open to an exit if he is unsatisfied by the Red Devils’ progress under INEOS.

The Daily Mail have also reported that Man Utd want to retain Fernandes, while the Portuguese international is keen on remaining at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has 10 goals and seven assists in 33 Premier League appearances so far this season, and his current contract with the Red Devils is due to expire in 2026, meaning Man Utd could be forced to sell if he doesn’t sign a new deal by this time next year.

Although Fernandes looks set to stay, Ten Hag will be without Raphael Varane next season after the Frenchman confirmed he would be leaving the club once the 2023-24 campaign draws to a close.
