Erik ten Hag insists that Mason Mount’s Manchester United career is not over and believes he can still become a key player for the club.

Man Utd paid Chelsea €65m for Mount last summer but he has proved to be a huge flop so far.

He has no goals or assists in the Premier League and has been hit by injury problems, having not played since November.

Mount also appears completely incompatible with Bruno Fernandes in the same United team, and there are reports he is unsettled living in the north having grown up down south.

This has led to some claims that United will look to offload Mount at the end of the season but Ten Hag is refusing to write him off.

What did Ten Hag say?

"I am convinced he will be a [key player],” Ten Hag said.

"He didn't have the chance to prove this point, but he will be a very good player for Manchester United. It is really unfortunate, really disappointing for him, but also for us when you have such a class player in your middle and you cannot play him.

"He has had three injuries, as we all know, so he didn't, at any time, get into a rhythm. I am sure that when he is fit, he will play. He will get into that rhythm and he will contribute to a successful United."

Mount is now back in training with United and will be hoping for better fortunes between now and the end of the season.

The 25-year-old grew up in the Chelsea academy and spent 18 years at the club before departing for United.

In total, he made 195 appearances for the club and scored 33 goals. He played a key role in the Champions League victory in 2021 and also won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

United are next in action on Sunday afternoon as they take on Liverpool in the FA Cup.
