It is increasingly likely that Manchester United-target Denzel Dumfries will leave Inter Milan at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old’s contract expires in June 2025. The Nerazzurri have been in talks over extending his contract until 2027.

However, Dumfries is demanding a salary in unison with the best-paid players at the club.

Inter neither have the resources, nor do they believe that Dumfries is worth being one of the highest earners at San Siro. Unless Dumfries lowers his demands, then a contract renewal is not possible and they will sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2025.

Having already signed a long-term replacement at right wing-back this month in the form of Canada international Tajon Buchanan from Club Brugge for 10 million, Inter are even more open to a sale.

It has been widely reported that Inter would consider a sale in the region of €40-50m, should United make an offer.

A transfer before the end of the January transfer market is not on the table.

Man Utd are long-term admirers of Dumfries and were interested in signing him in 2023.

The Red Devils are in the market for a top right back in 2024, as the position has become something of a problem in recent seasons.

Manager Erik ten Hag is not happy with current options Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot.

Ten Hag is also a big fan of Dumfries, who he knows well from their time together in the Eredivisie, with the wing-back previously a player for Ajax’s rivals PSV.

Until a recent injury break, Dumfries has been arguably the best player in his position in Serie A this season, managing two goals and seven assists in all competitions for club and country.

His form has helped Inter to the top of Serie A and into the last-16 of the Champions League.

Dumfries is physically suited to the Premier League as he boasts strength, stamina, speed, aerial ability and has a goal threat.

He has been capped 50 times by the Netherlands national team, impressing at Euro 2020 and at the 2022 World Cup.
