Gary Neville has pleaded with Manchester United to complete at least two more transfers before the summer window shuts on Friday or says Erik ten Hag’s side will be under “real pressure”.

The Red Devils have been slow to act in the transfer market this summer, with Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund representing the sum total of their permanent signings to date, although Jonny Evans may follow.

Man Utd, though, also wanted to land a defensive midfielder and a centre-back, while an additional left-back has become imperative because of injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Neville has pinpointed the two signings that he wants to see arrive in his Sky Sports podcast.

“I think they have to try and do something in the transfer market this week. They have got to try and get players out. Some clubs get players out really well - United don’t tend to get players out really well,” he said.

“They’ve got better players in this summer but there’s no doubt they want another player or two - a left-back and a central midfield player. I think they need that or else they're going to be put under real pressure, particularly when all the other competitions kick in.

“There is another one or two players needed just to beef up the squad because of injuries. He does want another midfield player in there to sit alongside Casemiro, so it’s an important week for United before Arsenal [on Sunday].”

What deals are close?

Man Utd have six point through the opening three Premier League matches of the season, but after struggling to home wins against Wolves and Nottingham Forest look a side that needs urgently reinforced if its to challenge for the top four this season.

Financial Fair Play rules are stretching their capacity to sign players, which is why Neville says that they need to sell.

Harry Maguire to West Ham and Scott McTominay to Bayern Munich presently look like their best hope of raising funds. In the meantime, they are exploring the loan market for left-backs, with Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso looking the likeliest trio.
