Chelsea and Liverpool are set to be beaten to a key transfer by Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, who are on the verge of signing Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for Berge, who has attracted interest since he moved to Bramall Lane in 2020.

The Norwegian has just one year left on his contract at Sheffield United and could be set to depart for Burnley as a verbal agreement has almost been reached. A medical could even be scheduled for later today if talks accelerate quickly, Romano has revealed.

Burnley’s discussions regarding Berge were first reported by The Telegraph, but the proposed transfer has already moved quickly and could be officially announced before the start of the new Premier League season if things go smoothly.

Chelsea and Liverpool wanted Berge

During the 2023 January window, both Chelsea and Liverpool were in for Berge, with the two Premier League giants keen on adding reinforcements in midfield.

No bid was placed by either club, but Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom confirmed there was “interest” in the Norwegian international.

Speaking ahead of their FA Cup fourth round tie against Wrexham in January, Heckingbottom said: “I think there’s been interest, and there always is. “You start to hear it before windows and things like that, but there have been no bids.

“All I can do is stress the same things. With the position we’ve got ourselves in, I don’t want anyone to leave. The landscape’s changed with where we are and what we’ve got.

“But from my point of view, if we’re embargoed, it’s even more important they don’t leave. My stance on that won’t change.”

Berge, 25, made 37 Championship appearances last season - scoring six goals and providing five assists - as Sheffield United sealed promotion back to the Premier League after a two-year absence.
