Chelsea are confident of being able to sign Levi Colwill to a contract extension, according to a report.

The Blues have been keen on tying down the talented defender for some time. Liverpool have been eyeing a move, while Manchester City and Brighton are also very interested in the player.

Chelsea have always considered the youngster untouchable, but it needed a talk with Mauricio Pochettino to convince Colwill that he has a future at Stamford Bridge. The 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Brighton last season and wanted guarantees that he will feature prominently for Chelsea this season.

Brighton want a swap deal

That is according to The Guardian, which writes that talks over an extension are advanced and that Chelsea are confident of wrapping up the deal.

Brighton have been trying to get their former loanee back to the South Coast, even demanding that he be included in Chelsea's offer for Moises Caicedo, but their efforts have been fruitless.

Whether this will affect the negotiations for Caicedo remains to be seen, but Chelsea will be delighted that one of the biggest prospects in Europe is on the verge of committing his future to the club in what could be a transformative deal for the Blues. It is widely thought that Colwill has the raw potential to become one of the world's best defenders.

In addition to trying to strike a deal for Caicedo, Chelsea are also now in talks with Brighton over the potential transfer of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Moreover, centre-back Axel Disasi is expected to join from Monaco, but he will not threaten Colwill's prospects of game time as he is being brought in as cover for the injured Wesley Fofana.
