Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag has aired his frustration about the club's lack of investment in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have been much improved under their Dutch boss in his first season in charge, but they ultimately fell well short of mounting a title challenge. The ambitious coach is keen to change that, but in order to get United back on their perch for the first time since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, he needs better players.

Ten Hag has made no secret of his desire to bring in fresh faces in the summer, repeatedly hammering home the point that his side needs a proper number nine in order to compete at the top end of the table - and in Europe - again. Heading into the summer, however, a worrying uncertainty over the budget for next season persists due to the ongoing takeover saga.

Perhaps with this in mind, Ten Hag fired some shots at the Glazers, the current owners, after the final Premier League game of the season on Sunday.

What did Ten Hag say?

Following his side's 2-1 win over Fulham, which cemented third place, the Dutchman said: "We are in the right direction, but we are not there where we have to be, there's still a long way to go, there's potential in this team and individual players."

"We showed during the season we made progress, that's a compliment to the players and the coaches, we worked really hard, but we have to make an investment."

"The club knows if you want to play top four, compete for trophies in this tough league then you have to invest otherwise you don't have a chance because other clubs will do."

Looking back at the January window, Ten Hag remarked: "We've seen it in the winter. All the clubs around us made huge investments and we didn't. But still we made it, so I'm proud of my team."
