Manchester United may have been resurgent prior to their 7-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday but were quickly brought back down to earth by that loss.

Roy Keane, in his position as a pundit for Sky Sports, spoke after the game about the “circus” of being at Old Trafford and that is back in full swing after that heavy and, admittedly, embarrassing loss.

Barely a player at Man Utd has escaped criticism following the Anfield capitulation, with Bruno Fernandes drawing particular ire from the United fans due to his lacklustre performance.

Wout Weghorst now is having the screw turned on him, with the Netherlands international’s credentials as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo increasingly questioned.

First it was friend of Ronaldo, Piers Morgan, who took to Twitter to criticise the striker, and now Richard Keys has suggested that the 30-year-old is the poorest player ever to wear the shirt of the Old Trafford club.

Weghorst is 'bang ordinary'

In a blog post he claimed: “Weghorst has to be the worst player I’ve ever seen in a United jersey.

“He’s a bang ordinary No 9, who couldn’t get in a struggling Burnley team, but what on earth possesses Seven Hag to think he’s a sumptuous 10?

“One who can ‘wear the tuxedo’ as the Americans say. Come on. It’s a joke and the manager has got to give up pretending that Weghorst has got something to offer.”

Weghorst only arrived at Old Trafford in January as a stop-gap following the departure of Ronaldo by mutual consent in November and has mustered only a single goal to date for the Red Devils.

FootballTransfers, in conjunction with data analytics experts SciSports, give Weghorst a skill rating of 69.8, and at the age of 30 this is not projected to get any better. He does hold a higher current skill score than some of his team-mates, but of the outfielders on Man Utd’s books, his top potential of 69.8 is the lowest current score – with the exception of Phil Jones.
