Paul Scholes has gone against the grain by imploring Manchester United to sign Lautaro Martinez over highly-sought Victor Osimhen.

The former Red Devils midfielder believes the striker from Inter Milan would be a better choice than the Nigerian hitman as he 'would suit Erik ten Hag's style of play' better.

Ten Hag is in the market for a marquee striker in the upcoming summer window.

So far the club have been forced to rely on loanee forward Wout Weghorst to fill the spot left by Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his contract terminated late last year, as well as injury-plagued Anthony Martial.

Man Utd are looking to bring in a quality No.9, with Harry Kane also on the list. But Scholes has suggested that the club must try and sign Martinez over anyone else, believing that Kane would be too tricky to steal from Tottenham.

He told BT Sport: “I don't think Kane will leave Tottenham. I think it's difficult to deal with Dan Levy. I think Osimhen is a great player, but I think he is more suited for Chelsea. I think Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan would suit Ten Hag's style of play.”

The Argentina international Martinez was a standout player for Antonio Conte during Inter's 2020-21 title-winning campaign.

He was subsequently linked with Chelsea and Tottenham but ended up remaining with Inter.

Osimhen on his future

Osimhen, the top scorer in Serie A, is also being considered owing to his spellbinding form for Napoli.

The attacker has scored 23 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions this term and has publicly stated his desire to move to the Premier League one day.

“I don't know what the future holds. I think I'm on the right track,” said Osimhen.

“At the end of the season, I will sit down with my agents and discuss everything. I will also be in talks with the club. I am incredibly grateful to Naples. We will find a good solution together.”
