Manchester City are set to offer Erling Haaland a new contract worth an astronomical £500,000 per week in an attempt to stop him joining Real Madrid.

Haaland currently earns £375,000 a week, which makes him Man City’s second highest earner behind Kevin de Bruyne.

The new offer would see Haaland eclipse De Bruyne as the best paid player at the club, according to The Sun.

The reason for the offer is City are concerned about Real Madrid’s interest in Haaland.

Haaland completed a €60 million transfer to Man City from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

The striker turned down Real Madrid in order to join the English champions.

But it is widely believed that Haaland only plans on staying at City for two or three seasons before moving onto another league.

Real Madrid favourites for Haaland

Real Madrid are considered the favourites to be his next club. The Spanish media believe that Madrid see Haaland as the successor to Karim Benzema, who recently turned 35 and is increasingly injury-prone.

Haaland has a release clause in his Man City contract that comes into effect in the summer of 2024 that is worth €200 million.

According to The Athletic, that release clause is only valid for clubs outside of the Premier League.

It is also reported that the release clause will decrease each year after it is activated in 2024.

Man City hope to change the terms of his contract and with a bumper salary increase they hope it will convince Haaland to stay for the long term.

Haaland has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2022-23 season, breaking record after record and scoring 42 goals in his first 37 games.
