All over Europe there are a host of big-name stars who are set to be available on a free transfer, including the likes of PSG’s Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema.

Man Utd are set to be affected also as they have seven senior players on their books who are set to depart as it stands.

What Man Utd players see their contracts expire in 2023?

The highest-profile Man Utd players whose deal expires at the end of June 2023 is goalkeeper David de Gea.

De Gea, 32, has been a mainstay of the Man Utd team since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making over 600 appearances.

Man Utd do have an option to extend De Gea’s contract by a further year, as is customary at the club, and the two parties are discussing a new deal. According to a number of sources, the key could be whether De Gea is willing to take a pay cut on his £375,000 per week wages.

Another long-serving Man Utd player whose contract expires is Phil Jones.

United also possess an option to extend Jones by a further year but will not activate it following years of injury problems. Jones has played just six Premier League games in the last four seasons. His 12-year Man Utd career is coming to an end.

There is also an option for Man Utd backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton to extend his expiring contract by another year. But this will not be taken up given he is now 36.

Another goalkeeper, Jack Butland, signed for Man Utd on loan from Crystal Palace in January. He is due to return to Palace at the end of the month.

Wout Weghorst also moved to Man Utd on loan from Burnley in January and started well before drifting away. He is also due to return to Burnley in June but given how much he is liked by manager Erik ten Hag there is a chance he could remain permanently.

Marcel Sabitzer moved to United on loan on Deadline Day and his future is unlikely to be at Old Trafford.

Finally, defender Axel Tuanzebe sees his contract expire and his certainly won’t be renewed. He is on loan until the end of month at Stoke.
