Borussia Dortmund have incredibly unearthed a replacement for Erling Haaland in the form of 17-year-old striker Youssoufa Moukoko, who enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a spectacular display against Bochum on Saturday.

The teenager struck twice against the relegation strugglers to take his tally of the season to six goals in 12 games in the Bundesliga.

These efforts have taken him to 10 career goals in Germany’s top flight, making him the youngest player ever to achieve the feat.

Unsurprisingly, he has already started to attract the attention of clubs from around Europe. Indeed, last month it was revealed that Liverpool are leading Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race to sign the young forward.

More surprisingly, Dortmund remain cool over his contract, which expires next June – but why?

Moukoko waiting to sign new Dortmund contract

Although a transfer is unlikely to be imminent – Dortmund try to only sell one major star per summer and it appears that Jude Bellingham will be the player to depart in 2023 – clubs are jostling for position with regards Moukoko.

Interestingly, his contract expires at the end of this season, but he is set to wait until after 20 November to sign a new deal.

It is on this date that he will turn 18, and if he signs the deal after this date, he will have access to his full salary. If he decided to sign a deal before this point, it would have to be co-signed by his parents, which means they would have access to his money.

In the meantime, he appears happy at Dortmund, where he is enjoying a breakout year, notably keeping Anthony Modeste out of the team after he was signed as a replacement to the ill Sebastien Haller.

Moukoko has forced his way into a regular starting spot in the Bundesliga having netted against Bayern Munich in October, and he has back up that performance impressively.

It is thought that he is a fan of head coach Eden Terzic, which means he is settled at the club.

Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid will, therefore, be kept waiting on Moukoko – but he may well be worth it.
