Benfica will demand an astronomical fee for Argentine sensation Enzo Fernandez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Fernandez has been one of the breakout stars in European football this season with both club side Benfica and at the World Cup with Argentina.

This has led to interest from a host of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and others.

But any chance of signing Fernandez in 2023 seems slim as Romano says that not only do Benfica plan to keep him for the 2023-24 season, but that they also value him at a massive price.

What did Romano say?

“Benfica will ask for crazy money,” Romano said on The United Stand.

“They hope to keep the player for one more season, so not an easy one, but if it will continue like this, I think it will be more than €80-85 million for Enzo Fernandez.”

Fernandez is a central midfielder who often plays as a deep-lying playmaker - although he also has a propensity to arrive in the box late and score goals.

He joined Benfica this summer for €18m and has already proved to be a bargain.

He has scored three goals and provided four assists for a Benfica team who are top of the Portuguese league with 12 wins and a draw from 13 games. They also topped their Champions League group above PSG, winning home and away versus Juventus.

Fernandez has also impressed at the World Cup, scoring a brilliant curling goal to seal a 2-0 win for Argentina over Mexico in matchday two.

He was thus rewarded with a starting place for the final game of the group against Poland on Wednesday evening.

Argentina need a win to guarantee qualification from Group C into the last-16.
