Cristiano Ronaldo was booed on his return to the Manchester United starting line-up after his absence following disciplinary action.

Ronaldo was dropped for United’s draw against Chelsea and was made to train alone after walking out on the team during their recent win over Tottenham, however he has since been integrated back into the first-team.

Manager Erik ten Hag insisted that the situation was now resolved and he was reinstated to the team for United’s Europa League game against Sheriff Tiraspol alongside youngster Alejandro Garnacho, making his first senior start.

REVEALED: Ronaldo's apology to Ten Hag

However, while Ten Hag may have moved on from Ronaldo’s actions, the United fans were less forgiving and booed his name when it was called out inside Old Trafford.

Ronaldo’s first touch was also booed by fans but they quickly chose to, instead, show their excitement over the inclusion of Garnacho, with the 18-year-old considered one of the brightest prospects at United.

United have already qualified for the next round of the Europa League although Ten Hag still chose to field a strong line-up, with just four changes made from the Chelsea game.

Can Ronaldo still silence the boos?

Despite Ronaldo’s illustrious career, it is not the first time he has been booed by his own fans, having suffered a similar ordeal at Real Madrid.

Madristas chose to boo Ronaldo at multiple times in 2016 and 2017 and both times he responded by scoring, even grabbing a hat-trick and putting his finger to his lips to silence the supporters.

United fans may be hoping for a similar reaction even if a 37-year-old Ronaldo may not be as sharp as his Madrid days, although few would say his desire to succeed has diminished in any way.

Ronaldo will certainly need to showcase his best form to get back into the good books of both Ten Hag and the United fans, although many have expressed that the Portuguese star is right where he belongs in being used as a replacement for Marcus Rashford in a meaningless Europa League game.

All eyes will be on Ronaldo in the coming weeks to show that he truly has learned from his mistakes or whether players like Garnacho will establish themselves as the future of United and pushing Cristiano into the past.
