Mohamed Salah has responded to Barcelona’s interest in signing him and has explained what Liverpool must do in order for him to sign a new contract.

The Egyptian’s future at Liverpool is very much in doubt as his contract expires in 2023.

While the Reds have managed to sign a succession of key players down to new deals, Salah has thus far eluded them, with reports he is chasing a sizeable wage increase.

"I said it several times, if the decision is up to me, I want to stay in Liverpool,” Salah told MBC. "But the decision is in the hands of the management and they have to solve this issue.

“There is no problem but we have to reach an agreement for the contract. It’s up to them.

“Your financial value shows how much the club appreciates you and that they are ready to do anything for you to stay, but the decision itself is not based on those financial matters only.

“There are things like the ambition of the team and the coach and what he wants to do with the team and the players he wants. These are all important points when making the decision."

What did Salah say about Barcelona interest

Salah has been linked with a number of top clubs if he were to leave Liverpool, with Barcelona one of the giants chasing the 29-year-old.

New Barcelona coach Xavi is said to be a huge fan of the former Roma and Chelsea star, and Salah says he is flattered.

“I read what was said about Xavi’s interest to sign me,” Salah stated.

"This is something that makes me happy that a team like Barcelona is interested in me, but I’m happy in Liverpool and we will see what happens in the future.

“At the moment, I prefer to stay in the Premier League as it’s the strongest league in the world."

Salah joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 and has since gone on to score a brilliant 144 goals in 223 games, playing a key role in the 2019 Champions League and 2020 Premier League title victories.
