Rodgers does not dismiss England rumours but says he’s happy at Leicester

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has not dismissed claims that he could take the England job in the future.

Former Liverpool and Celtic manager Rodgers has taken Leicester into a Champions League spot, with the Foxes currently placed third in the Premier League.

Ahead of a big match against West Ham, it was suggested by Gary Neville that Rodgers would make an ideal replacement for Gareth Southgate when he leaves the England post.

While the Leicester boss played down the prospect of taking on the role in the immediate future, he did not dismiss the prospect of one day taking over the Three Lions.

“I want to manage at international level at some point in my career. I’ve always said that. I’m very happy here,” he told the press.

“I’ve signed a long contract here and I’ve only been here just over a couple of years. For me, being at Leicester City is the absolutely perfect place for me. I can develop players, I’ve got great relations with the board and the hierarchy here. I still feel there’s a lot of improvements we can make. I look no further than where I am at the moment.”

Rodgers backs Southgate

Meanwhile, Rodgers backed the job that Southgate has done and made an encouraging forecast to England fans ahead of Euro 2020 in the summer.

“Gareth, in that job, has done great,” he said. “He’s made a lot of improvements between him and his staff. They’ve got an exciting generation of players, not only now, but for the next decade or so. They’re always going to be competitive.”

Rodgers, meanwhile, has won praise for the manner in which he has allowed Leicester to recapture something like the form they showed when they unexpectedly won the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri in 2016, before which they were cast as 5000/1 outsiders.
