Aaron Ramsey’s future could well be at Newcastle United come January, with Juventus open to selling the Wales international star.

While much is expected of Newcastle in the forthcoming transfer window, expectations of genuine superstar arrivals should be tempered.

The St James’ Park side may be the richest in world football following the recent takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, but the prospect of a relegation battle will be unappealing to the game’s best players while their clubs will not be open to selling in any case.

Newcastle are likely to have to make do with players already on the transfer list, although the chances are they will have their pick of these wantaway stars.

Ramsey, who turns 31 on Boxing Day, is undoubtedly one of the highest profile and is once again linked to Newcastle by Tuttosport.

A move that works all round

Having starred in the Premier League with Arsenal, he made a Bosman move to Juventus in 2019 but has since struggled to impose himself. A strong display for Wales at Euro 2020 was a reminder of the talent that the former Arsenal star possesses, but Juventus do not appear to have the patience or the financial strength to unlock it in Turin.

After all, Ramsey commands a large wage of around €14 million (£12m) per year and with Juve seeking to make cuts, it would be a logical step to sever their ties with an expensive fringe player.

Indeed, Juventus would have offloaded him in the summer had there been a potential buyer.

Now one has emerged in Newcastle. Absorbing such a wage will be no problem for them, while the prospect of welcoming such a classy and rounded player to St James’ Park is doubtless an attractive one.

For Ramsey, Newcastle can offer the opportunity of an escape to his difficult period in Serie A and a return to the familiar setting of the Premier League, in which he has played his best football in the past.

Newcastle will have no problems affording his €14m transfer fee, so a transfer from Juventus appears a logical step for Ramsey and the nouveau-riche Premier League side.
