Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been mocked on social media after labelling Chelsea flop Mykhailo Mudryk as the “real deal”.

A video surfaced on Monday on Twitter in which Gerrard, Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand are in the BT Studio analysing Mudryk’s Chelsea debut last year against Liverpool.

Mudryk had a promising debut in that match, threatening Liverpool on a number of occasions.

And his performance led Gerrard to prematurely hail the Ukraine winger.

“I’d be extremely excited about Mudryk if I was a Chelsea fan,” Gerrard said.

“He looks like the real deal. He reminds me of Arjen Robben.

“His footwork, how quick he is, the way he manipulates the ball. I’d be very excited if I were Chelsea.”

Gerrard’s comments were echoed by co-pundits Cole and Ferdinand, who both hailed the talents of Mudryk.

These comments have come back to haunt Gerrard, who has been mocked mercilessly for his take.

“Did he hit his head on a pole or something,” one Twitter user said of Gerrard.

“Mudryk fooled everyone. The guy has to be the greatest magician of all time,” said another.

However, some users defended Gerrard and instead blamed Mauricio Pochettino for not getting the best out of Mudryk.

“Pochettino is Mudryk’s nightmare,” said one supporter.

Mudryk at Chelsea

Mudryk joined Chelsea for €100 million in January 2023 from Shakhtar Donetsk after the Blues hijacked Arsenal's deal for the winger.

However, Mudryk has flopped badly at Stamford Bridge and was even linked with a January transfer away from Chelsea.

Since joining Chelsea, Mudryk has managed just six goals and four assists in 53 appearances amidst a string of poor performances.

Pochettino has publicly stated on numerous occasions that the player must improve in a number of areas, and his future past this summer is in question.

Chelsea are enduring yet another dreadful season. They are ninth in the Premier League, 19 points behind Aston Villa in fourth and with no chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Last season, the Blues finished 12th in the Premier League.
