Messi was hit with a club ban after he took a trip to Saudi Arabia, missing training.

The game was a rout for PSG - Fabian Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, a double by Kylian Mbappe and Mohamed Youssouf's own goal saw off their Ligue 1 opponents.

But even in the win, fans were still annoyed with Messi and his off-the-pitch antics of late.

The Parc des Princes crowd booed when Messi's name was announced in the line-up, as well as when he took his first touch of the ball.

Messi returned to training on Monday after a two-week club-imposed suspension.

He took a holiday to the Middle East just a day after the Ligue 1 leaders' 3-1 defeat to Lorient in April.

Messi did come out and apologise for taking the trip in a video released to fans. He said: “Hello, well, I wanted to make this video after everything that is happening. I thought we were going to have a day off after the game as always. I had this trip organised and I couldn't cancel it. I had already cancelled it before. I apologise to my teammates and I'm waiting for what the club wants to do with me”.

Messi's PSG future uncertain

Messi has become a World Cup winner during his time at PSG. It’s not been a bad two years at the club - he has registered 31 goals and 34 assists in 72 appearances. But he is still yet to sign a fresh deal, with his current one up next month.

Renato Sanches, Messi’s team-mate, said of the situation: “I think it’s a bit tricky for everyone and especially for Lionel because no player appreciates this kind of moment. But it is a situation that we cannot control. It’s a bit difficult for him. But it is not for me to talk about this situation. If he should stay at PSG? Ask him.”
