Steven Gerrard has been backed for the top job at Paris Saint-Germain by a French former Liverpool teammate.

Christophe Galtier is under pressure in Paris and Gerrard is looking for work following his dismissal by Aston Villa in October.

PSG got back to winning ways recently, but they lost three on the bounce in all competitions last month, and a Champions League exit to Bayern Munich at the last 16 stage next Wednesday could potentially mean curtains for Galtier.

Gerrard stopped Celtic completing 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row with Rangers in 2021 before his ill-fated spell at Villa, and while the PSG job might seem beyond him at this early stage of his managerial career, Gregory Vignal thinks he could do it.

Vignal: 'why not PSG?'

"I'm pretty sure that Steven is ready to crack on again," the former Liverpool and Rangers left-back told the Scottish Daily Express. "I think he is strong enough mentally to start a new project.

"Why not Paris Saint-Germain? They have been talking about him. I am sure he can get a good job soon whether that is in the Premier League or abroad."

One of the best central midfielders to play the game, former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard retains plenty of gravitas from his playing days.

He has been working as a pundit since his Villa dismissal as well while he remains close to Liverpool, whom he represented more than 700 times in his career, winning the 2005 Champions League along the way.

He would like to return to management soon, though.

"I wish I still was [involved]," he told BT Sport. "I think when you're around the pitch, in the stadium, you see the teams come in, you speak to Jurgen, you get that buzz of a feeling of a matchday - I don't think I'll ever lose that or not want to be involved in that.

"I am enjoying it at the moment being around my family, watching football. I'm enjoying being back here today stress-free, but I think if you love the game and you've got it in your DNA you're always going to miss it."
