Why Morocco's AFCON star should seek a transfer away from Real Madrid
Real Madrid attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz has shown his worth with Morocco at AFCON.
The Moroccan playmaker scored in every game in the tournament except for the semifinal, which his nation won on penalties.
With his club, Diaz has only received 494 minutes of playing time across 18 appearances.
Perhaps the new era under Alvaro Arbeloa will provide new opportunities for Diaz, although the player may want to capitalize on his performances and seek a move sooner rather than later.
Why a move makes sense
Over the last two full seasons with Los Blancos, Diaz has averaged at least 0.5 goal contributions per 90 minutes.
His best season as a professional was 2023/24, when he scored 12 goals with eight assists in 44 appearances (22 starts).
Still, he has never started in more than half his appearances in a single season at Real Madrid.
The diminutive playmaker also put up strong numbers in three seasons on loan to AC Milan between 2020 and 2023. He scored 18 goals with 15 assists in 122 appearances in all competitions.
Considering that Diaz has greatly improved over the last few seasons, he should use his AFCON display to move to a club where he can start every match.
As a winger and attacking midfielder, Diaz will be competing for playing time against the likes of Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, Franco Mastantuono, and Gonzalo Garcia for as long as he’s at the club.
For most players, battling against Vinicius, Mbappe, Rodrygo, and Bellingham is a losing proposition.
That’s not to take anything away from Diaz’s talent. But he should not let his judgement be clouded by his ambition to play for Los Blancos.
He has already proven himself to be effective on the international stage and in Spain and Italy, so he should seek new pastures.
