The subject of the Manchester United captaincy has been an important one this summer, but there were no surprises when Erik ten Hag announced that Bruno Fernandes would take the role from Harry Maguire.
On the fringes of Ten Hag’s thinking, Maguire had the role only in name last season, with the Portugal international taking the role on a more regular basis.
With that change now official, what may prove to be more surprising at Old Trafford is the reason why Bruno has been given the armband and who could be next in line to take it should the former Sporting CP player be absent.

Man Utd youngster Alvaro Fernandez has revealed these dressing room secrets in an interview with AS.
He was questioned by the Spanish publication over why Casemiro had been overlooked for the role, given his long history of winning at Real Madrid.
“Against Arsenal, he was captain in the second half. But I think Bruno, he’s been here for longer and they’ve now given him the armband. He has, let’s say, more power,” the 20-year-old left-back revealed.

Lisandro Martinez's growing Man Utd influence
Alvaro also suggested that Casemiro may not even be next in line for the honour soon, suggesting instead that a player Ten Hag drafted in from Ajax could claim the job.
“He’s a very nice guy, Bruno, and Lisandro is gaining a lot of importance,” he claimed.
“It is Lisandro who gives me the most advice. Defensively he is very close to me, he tells me how to position myself. He plays by my side and I get on very well with him.
“Since he arrived, the level of aggressiveness he has is incredible. He doesn't disconnect for a second. In pre-season he has always impressed me and the intensity that he puts in from behind is outrageous.”
Lisandro was not on the field when Casemiro had the captaincy against Arsenal, suggesting that the battle to be Bruno Fernandes’ vice-captain is still an open one.
