Rashford left out in the cold at Barcelona after latest registration decision
Barcelona have made a decision on Marcus Rashford’s registration with La Liga following the news that they have been given additional space on their wage bill.
A long-term injury to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has provided the Blaugrana an opportunity to register a replacement. The Germany international had been in dispute with the club over this issue, but the bad blood between the two parties appears to have been put to one side for now.
Barcelona, though, have been faced with a difficult decision over who to register in Ter Stegen’s place given there are five players, including summer signings Rashford, Joan Garcia and Roony Bardghji, who have been banned from playing in La Liga due to the club’s financial issues.
The Catalans have already come to a conclusion over which player they will pick to come into the team ahead of Sunday’s match with Mallorca – and it’s set to be a disappointment for on-loan Manchester United star Rashford.
A statement from the club, released on Wednesday evening, reads:
“FC Barcelona hereby announces that LaLiga’s Medical Committee has ruled that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury meets the long-term injury criteria established by current regulations.
“The club will proceed tomorrow to immediately formalise the registration of player Joan Garcia.”
Garcia has been picked ahead of Rashford because otherwise Barcelona would have faced a goalkeeping crisis.
Prior to the former Espanyol keeper’s registration, the Catalans would have been down to their fourth-choice shot-stopper. As well as Ter Stegen being injured, Wojciech Szczesny is another player who has not been successfully registered yet.
An epidemic in La Liga
Barcelona are not the only club in LaLiga to be suffering from these stringent measures.
AS reports that there are 158 summer signings still not registered, accounting for more than 50% of the 283 moves in Spain’s top two divisions during this window.
Sevilla only have 14 available players, according to LaLiga’s official website, while Levante have just three listed.
Barca, who are still fighting to register Rashford, Szczesny and more will have to free up space by making sales or otherwise raising significant funds in the next two weeks.
