When can Man City win the Premier League?

Despite being top for the majority of the campaign, it looks like Arsenal will have to settle for second place. The last time they finished that high was in the 2015-16 season when Leicester City won the league.

In that sense, it’s been a good term for Mikel Arteta and his men - but they look to be edged out of the silverware by Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are on course for their fifth title in six years. It will also be their third consecutive Premier League.

Can Man City win the Premier League this coming week?

Man City can win the Premier League with their next match - which is against Chelsea at home. But Arsenal will hand Man City the title if they lose to Nottingham Forest next Saturday and the Citizens draw or win after.

Indeed, if City beat Chelsea, it means that they will be on 88 points with two games remaining. Even if they lose their following two matches, Arsenal cannot catch them thereafter.

A draw and two losses for Man City would give Arsenal hope, but the Gunners would have to win their final two games of the season.

The maximum available points to the Gunners is 87. If Man City draw their next two matches it would put them on 87 as well, but Arsenal would have to make up a goal difference of 20 within two matches, an almost impossible ask.

For Arsenal, it was the month of April that had done it. Going into their game at Anfield against Liverpool they had just drawn three and lost three all season, winning the other 29.

They drew against the Reds 2-2, before settling for draws against West Ham and Southampton – both sides fighting relegation at this point. They played Manchester City at the Etihad and looked quite toothless, though the home side were ruthless.

The nail in the coffin was the 3-0 loss to Brighton at home, with the title race effectively over at that point.
