Arsenal and Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira is moving to Turkey with Galatasaray, the Gunners confirmed on Monday.

Torreira, 26, had long been tipped for departure from the Emirates Stadium, having spent the last two seasons away from the club on loan.

He had been willing to stay on at Fiorentina following his last temporary spell, but instead will line up in the Super Lig after sealing a deal worth a reported €6.5 million.

"Midfielder Lucas Torreira has joined Turkish Super Lig side Galatasaray in a permanent transfer," Arsenal confirmed in a statement published on the club's official website.

"Everyone at Arsenal thanks Lucas for his contribution during his time with us. We wish Lucas and his family the best of health and happiness in their new chapter with Galatasaray.

"The deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes."

Where did it go wrong for Torreira at Arsenal?

Torreira moved to Arsenal from Sampdoria in July 2018 after shining as a youngster for the Serie A club.

The midfielder initially appeared to fit perfectly into the Gunners team, making 50 appearances in all competitions in his debut season as Arsenal reached the Europa League final and lifting the FA Cup the following term.

But he then lost ground in the club's plans and was made surplus to requirements, while he did not live up to expectations either during a loan move to Atletico Madrid in 2020-21.

Last season saw Torreira recover his best form at Fiorentina, but his hopes of staying in Italy were thwarted when the Viola failed to exercise his release clause, forcing him to return to London.
