The summer of 2021 saw an unprecedented number of world-class superstars running down their contracts and signing for new clubs on a free transfer.

We saw Lionel Messi, Gigio Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Gini Wijnaldum all move to Paris Saint-Germain, David Alaba sign for Real Madrid, and the likes of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay go to Barcelona.

The season itself also saw some big free transfer signings, with the likes of Dani Alves' return to Barcelona, Christian Eriksen's switch to Brentford and many others.

The summer of 2022 is proving to be no different, as there have already been a string of massive Bosman transfers.

Messi, Pirlo, Ramos and the biggest Bosman transfers of all time

Chelsea duo Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have signed for Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, while Alexandre Lacazette returned to Lyon and Nemanja Matic signed for Roma.

From Spain, Gareth Bale moved to Los Angeles FC, while from Italy we saw Ivan Perisic sign for Tottenham and Lorenzo Insigne fly out to Toronto.

In France, highly-rated youngster Boubacar Kamara joined Aston Villa, whilst in Germany Niklas Sule left Bayern Munich for Borussia Dortmund and Corentin Tolisso returned to Lyon.

Not one of them commanded a transfer fee.

Who are the best free transfers in soccer?

From 1 July, just like every year, a whole host of players whose contracts expired at their clubs became free agents.

Even when the transfer window is closed from September to December and February to July, clubs around Europe and the world can still sign these free agents outside of the regular transfer windows.

Below are the best free agents unattached and available to be signed for nothing on a Bosman Transfer as of July 1, 2022.

The pick of the bunch are Paul Pogba, Paulo Dybala, Ousmane Dembele and Angel di Maria.

Pogba and Di Maria are set to join Juventus, while Dybala is in negotiations with Inter.

Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie have now been officially announced as Barcelona players, while Ousmane Dembele could yet sign a contract extension at Camp Nou due to limited interest elsewhere.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still playing at 40 and expected to sign a new short-term deal at Milan.

Elsewhere some legends of the game are available for nothing, namely Brazil stars Marcelo and Dani Alves, and France winger Franck Ribery.
