Mourinho admits that Gedson Fernandes could leave in January

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that bit-part midfielder Gedson Fernandes could cut short his loan spell from Benfica in January.

The 21-year-old arrived at White Hart Lane in January 2020 on an 18-month loan with the option to make the deal permanent.

However, he has struggled to make his mark in north London and has not figured in a single minute of Premier League football this season.

This has led to reports that Gedson could return to Benfica six months earlier when the January transfer window opens, something that Mourinho is open to.

“For me it is never a problem, but a solution,” Mourinho told SportTV.

“Having him in the squad, even if he is not called up and not playing, is an extremely comfortable situation.

“If the club wants to end the relationship here, we will be here to collaborate, because we want the good of the player. Benfica has the power to decide and will be accepted by us.”

Gedson Fernandes was considered one of the brightest prospects in Portuguese football when he joined Tottenham and he has already been capped twice by the senior national team.
