Barcelona manager Xavi has confirmed that the club are in talks to renew the contracts of Gavi and Sergi Roberto.

Representatives for both players have been negotiating with the club in recent weeks, however neither are said to be close to agreeing a deal yet.

Roberto’s contract expires at the end of the season whilst highly-rated prodigy Gavi is entering into the final 12 months of his deal with some of Europe’s elite clubs monitoring the situation.

Xavi was speaking about the futures of players including Ronald Araujo and Ousmane Dembele and remained assured all parties would come to an agreement.

“I have spoken several times, the club works on the present and the future,” Xavi said. “There is also a process of renewing Gavi and Roberto. These are negotiations.”

What is the situation with Gavi and Sergi Roberto?

Barcelona have been desperate to renew the contract of Gavi, however the 17-year-old has turned down three offers, prompting speculation he could leave in the summer.

Gavi has established himself as a regular in Xavi’s side, appearing 25 times in the league this season and has a €50 million release clause in his current deal.

Having also broken into the Spanish national side as the country’s youngest ever player, Gavi is believed to want a wage that reflects his dramatic rise to stardom.

Meanwhile, it was thought that Barcelona would not be making another offer to Roberto after he turned down an extension at the beginning of the season which would have seen him reduce his salary due to the club’s financial situation.

As one of the club captains and a long-time senior servant, Xavi is desperate for the club to come to an agreement with the 30-year-old and club president Joan Laporta admitted last month that the situation was unclear.

Laporta said: “I intervened in the negotiations with Sergi Roberto. I have a special appreciation for him, as he was a part of a glorious Barça.

“They decided not to accept the club’s proposal. We will see what happens. We have to talk to him and leave things clear from both parties.”
