Chelsea announce new signing after missing out on midfielder on transfer deadline day

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of a new player after seeing the transfer window close on Tuesday without the addition of a new midfielder.

The Blues sold Enzo Fernandez for €145 million to Manchester City late in the window but failed to sign a replacement in time after seeing Monaco renege on an agreement to sell Lamine Camara.

With Xabi Alonso now short-staffed in midfield, speculation had emerged that Chelsea would sign a free agent such as Gini Wijnaldum to bolster their numbers in the middle of the park, although those reports were quickly denied.

Chelsea have now officially announced the signing of a new player in Denner, who joins from Corinthians, having agreed a deal for the left-back last year to join when he turned 18, which happened in February.

A brief statement on Chelsea’s website confirmed that Denner would be linking up with the club’s ‘Cobham Next Gen’ or ‘CNG’ squad – the new name for the under-21 and under-18s side.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed in March 2025 that the deal was thought to be worth around €10m plus €4m in add-ons, with Denner revealed to have signed a contract until 2034.

The mystery over his announcement had led to fears that the deal would not go through but the delay is understood to be a work permit issue, as well as Denner having had an injury issue prior to his arrival.

Denner is described by Chelsea as a ‘forward-thinking, left-sided defender’ who starred for Corinthians under-20s as they finished runners up in the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior last year.

The youngster scored three goals and two assists, including in the final, and is a Brazilian youth international who has been capped three times by the under-17s.

Denner, whose cousin is Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes, is unlikely to feature for Chelsea’s first team any time soon, having yet to play senior football in his club career.
