Cobham in crisis! Chelsea have stopped trusting their own academy

Chelsea’s decision to rival Arsenal to sign free agent John Stones should perhaps come as little surprise.

After all, the Blues spent much of last season crying out for more experience, particularly in their defence. Thiago Silva’s departure in 2024 left a void that was never filled, and in the vastly experienced Stones, there is a transfer target who is both low cost and comparatively easily attainable.

But the very fact that Chelsea are looking at such a signing is further evidence that the club is losing faith in its academy – an area that the Stamford Bridge side once took the greatest pride in.

Indeed, it’s ironic that the Blues have spent the last three years aggressively pursuing young talent to develop only to ignore those who have come through the ranks at Cobham.

Among those entitled to feel disenchanted is 20-year-old centre-back prospect Josh Acheampong, who made 17 Premier League appearances last term but could find himself cast to one side with the arrival of Stone.

The Daily Mail confirms: “The 20-year-old would be forgiven for wondering whether he will receive meaningful minutes in the upcoming season, with Chelsea having fallen out of European football. Sources close to Acheampong believe he is ready to play.”

Chelsea a team of Man City graduates

The backdrop to Acheampong potentially being pushed to the periphery is one in which Chelsea have increasingly targeted Manchester City’s academy graduates as being those to set the standard at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, the Blues have just splashed a British record fee of £117 million (€137m) to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, with the City graduate arriving in West London also via Middlesbrough.

A year earlier, it was Liam Delap they recruited for £30m (€35.5m) from Ipswich, and prior to that it was Cole Palmer, who has become the figurehead player of the BlueCo era.

As BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella points out, there will only be three Chelsea academy graduates among Xabi Alonso’s regular first-team squad for the season ahead: Levi Colwill, Reece James and Acheampong – and that’s only if the young centre-back does not get disenchanted and leaves.

He has, after all, 10 potential rivals currently on Chelsea’s books to battle with.

Cobham conveyor belt has stopped

Chelsea’s golden age when it came to youth production came around their 2019 transfer ban, which made introducing young players to the first team necessary.

Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Andreas Christensen and Reece James were among those to break through in that era, with manager Frank Lampard willingly throwing them into action.

A competitive edge has been lost since then. Owing to structural instability, Chelsea have lacked consistency in their approach at academy level, while major rivals Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have invested heavily in their systems.

Indeed, perhaps Chelsea’s most notable graduate in recent years, Rio Ngumoha, was pinched by the Reds, who offered him a better prospect of first-team football.

Ngumoha won’t be the last to leave if the status quo continues. Indeed, if a deal is completed for Stones, it would be little surprise to see Acheampong agitate to leave Stamford Bridge as Chelsea continue to leave one of the aspects that made them successful behind.
