Celtic agree club-record transfer for Daizen Maeda replacement

Daizen Maeda has completed a transfer to Ipswich Town, but Celtic have already secured his replacement by agreeing a deal with Bodo/Glimt for Kasper Hogh.

The Danish striker is a long-standing target for the Hoops, with the club having already pursued his signing in January. At the time, Celtic battled with Norwich City for his signature.

In the end, however, neither club managed to get their hands on Hogh because of Bodo/Glimt's fairytale run in the Champions League. Understandably, the club did not want to lose a player who would go on to score against Man City, Atletico Madrid and Inter.

The 25-year-old has continued his red-hot form in the new Norwegian season, bagging seven goals and seven assists in 12 appearances. But it now looks as though he has played his final game for Bodo/Glimt.

That's because Sky Sports reports that Celtic have agreed a club record fee of around €13 million (£11m) plus further add-ons with the Norwegian club for the transfer of Hogh.

The report makes no mention of an agreement on personal terms with the player, but there is now evidently optimism that this deal will go through. The timing of it could hardly have been better.

Ipswich Town have just announced the signing of Daizen Maeda, who has left Celtic for around €12m after making no secret of his desire to "fulfil his dream" and move to the Premier League.

Maeda's departure has left a gaping hole, but Celtic are poised to fill it with the hugely exciting signing of Hogh, who notched 54 goals in 103 games for Bodo/Glimt across all competitions.

The Dane is set to join a new-look Hoops frontline that has already been augmented with the €5.5m signing of Qarabag striker Camilo Duran. Celtic are also exploring a deal for Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan.

The upfront fee Celtic will pay for Hogh is in the same ballpark as the one they shelled out on Arne Engels. Celtic have never spent more than €13m upfront on a player, though Jota technically cost them €16.2m due to a 30% sell-on clause for Benfica that was triggered when he was sold to Al-Ittihad for €29.1m in 2023.
