Sandro Tonali edges closer to Arsenal transfer as replacement is found
Arsenal have potentially moved a step closer to signing Sandro Tonali after learning Newcastle United have identified AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as a midfield replacement, according to The Telegraph.
Tonali has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since joining Newcastle from Serie A giants AC Milan in 2023, playing a key role in the club ending their 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025.
Widespread reports have indicated the Italy international could become the next big-name player to leave the Magpies, following in the footsteps of both Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, as manager Eddie Howe presses ahead with plans to rebuild his side in the summer.
Tonali has been closely monitored by Manchester United, according to The Athletic, though his reported €115million (£100m) asking price remains a stumbling block for the club’s hierarchy.
An alternative report from Manchester Evening News claims Manchester City are also interested in signing Tonali and that their interest is separate to their ongoing pursuit of Nottingham Forest and England star Elliot Anderson.
However, Tonali also remains on Arsenal’s radar, according to The Times, as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his Premier League-winning side by signing a flexible midfielder who can operate as both a No. 6 and a No. 8.
Newcastle identify Camara as possible Tonali replacement
And now The Telegraph understands Newcastle would look to use the funds generated from Tonali's potential sale towards signing highly-rated Monaco ace Camara.
Camara, who has been included in Senegal’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, has also been watched by Liverpool, according to French publication L’Equipe, with the 22-year-old reportedly valued at €30m (£25.8m).
The former Metz midfielder has made 71 appearances for Ligue 1 side Monaco, scoring six goals. The principality side endured a difficult 2025-26 season, limping into seventh place and subsequent qualification for next season’s UEFA Conference League before sacking manager Sebastian Pocognoli at the end of the campaign.
Meanwhile Newcastle are hoping to add to their goalkeeping ranks by capturing Ewen Jaouen from French side Reims, though BBC Sport understands there is still work to be done before a deal is completed.
France Under-21 international Jaouen made 60 appearances in all competitions for Reims, who finished sixth in Ligue 2 last season. BBC Sport understands Newcastle are set to pay €28m (£24.2m) to sign the 20-year-old shot-stopper.
