Manchester United are set to win the race to sign in-demand West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes in a €92million (£80m) deal, according to The Times.

Fernandes has become one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe after proving to be a shining light in an otherwise dismal season for the Hammers, who were relegated from the Premier League following an 18th-place finish last term.

The 21-year-old has attracted interest from Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, according to widespread reports, with West Ham expected to sell as they look to cope without the Premier League’s riches next season.

And now according to The Times, United are increasingly confident of reaching an agreement to land Fernandes, having made strengthening their midfield a priority ahead of the summer transfer window opening on Monday, 15 June.

The news comes after BBC Sport claimed earlier in the week that United were cooling their interest in signing Nottingham Forest and England star Elliot Anderson after rivals Manchester City had a second bid worth up to €139m (£120m) rejected.

The same publication claims United are not interested in entering a bidding war for a player who does not have his heart set on moving to Old Trafford, with Anderson understood to be keen to play for City next season.

Anderson is currently preparing for England’s opening World Cup fixture against Croatia on Wednesday, 17 June, with the 23-year-old expected to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

Another man who is gearing up to play at the World Cup is Ederson, who United have agreed to sign from Serie A side Atalanta in a €40.5m (£35m) deal.

The completion of the transfer is set to be delayed, however, after the 26-year-old received a late call-up to the Brazil squad following an injury suffered by Roma defender Wesley last Sunday.

Fernandes meanwhile missed out on participating at the World Cup after he was not included in Portugal’s party for the World Cup. The former Sporting CP and Southampton man made his international debut in a friendly against United States in April.

Should United sign Ederson and Fernandes, it remains to be seen whether the club will look to sign a third central midfielder - a possibility the club’s hierarchy are mulling over, according to BBC Sport.

The same outlet claims United have ran the rule over Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, while a separate report from The Athletic understands the Red Devils have also monitored Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, to varying degrees of interest.
