Man Utd are PUSHING Antoine Semenyo to Liverpool - here's why
The race to sign Bournemouth superstar Antoine Semenyo is heating up, but Manchester United may have just made a blunder that could see the winger end up at Liverpool or Man City instead.
The Ghana international is the Premier League's hottest commodity heading into January. Semenyo is a man in form, he will not be at the Africa Cup of Nations and no negotiations with Bournemouth are required to sign him due to a release clause.
This clause stands at a sizeable €74 million, but suitors will feel that this is fair market value for one of the division's most devastating attackers. A quick resolution can be expected once the January window opens because his clause is only active for a few days.
Bournemouth managed to somewhat protect themselves by giving themselves enough time to source an adequate replacement. According to Fabrizio Romano, Semenyo's clause expires as early as 10 January.
The transfer insider has also revealed that Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool are the clubs most concretely interested in the 25-year-old, while Tottenham's interest appears to have gone cold.
Man Utd are pushing Semenyo away
According to TEAMtalk, Man Utd have held recent discussions with Semenyo and his camp. It is claimed that the Red Devils have "unleashed a charm offensive," yet what they told him will surely not have endeared them to him.
The report states that Semenyo was informed that he would be converted into an "attacking wing-back" akin to Amad Diallo on the right. He is exactly the kind of profile Ruben Amorim has been demanding.
However, given that Semenyo has been one of the standout attackers in the Premier League over the past two seasons, it is doubtful that he is keen on being shoehorned into a wing-back position.
It also raises questions over team balance. Man Utd's defence has been leaky - as illustrated by the 4-4 draw with Bournemouth on Monday - and adding another attacker into the equation will surely only exacerbate the problem.
Diallo has been exposed numerous times this season because he is simply not a defender. Why would Semenyo fare any better on the left? If anything, Man Utd need stability, not more chaos.
Relying on the superior quality of individuals and turning every game into an offensive slugfest is not a sustainable way of getting results in the hypercompetitive landscape of the Premier League. Reigning champions Liverpool have found that out the hard way this term.
With that in mind, it is perhaps a good thing that Man Utd told him that he would be converted into a wing-back, as that is unlikely to make him receptive to a move to Old Trafford. On the face of it, Semenyo would be an unnecessary signing for the Red Devils.
