Viktor Gyokeres might have made a promising start since signing for Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta is already on the hunt to enhance the Gunners’ options in the No.9 role once again.

Arsenal are ‘ones to watch’ in the growing battle to sign Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, with the 21-year-old Spain international striker in prolific form in Portugal.

Aghehowa has scored nine goals in 15 appearances for his side this season as they have raced to the top of their domestic standings and has attracted the attention of numerous major clubs as a result.

Chelsea are still tracking the player, who they nearly signed for €40 million from Atletico Madrid in 2014, Arsenal and Tottenham are all serious contenders to sign the player, the Daily Briefing reports.

Why do Arsenal want another striker?

Arteta is in the market for a new striker because of the ongoing injury concerns of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, who are his two alternatives to Gyokeres in the No.9 role.

The pair have combined for just 30 minutes of action this season, with the Brazilian still on the comeback trail after an ACL injury earlier this year and Havertz having missed out since the opening day of the Premier League complaint because of a knee complaint.

Samu Aghehowa: Will Arsenal sign Porto ace?

Arsenal have also been linked with Serhou Guirassy and Jean-Philippe Mateta in recent times, but Aghehowa offers a younger profile and still has significant room for growth. He would be signed as a support for Gyokeres but also someone who could potentially take on the No.9 duties from the Swede.

One major issue will be Porto’s asking price. Aghehowa has a release clause in his contract, which runs until 2029, worth €100 million. The Portuguese giants are resistant to dropping this figure at all but may accept a bid in the region of €90m.

With Tottenham “leading the race” to sign Aghehowa, it would be surprising to see Arsenal invest heavily in the player during January, but if the transfer race stretches to the summer, they could see him as a serious target.
