Seven players who risk missing Euro 2024 without January transfer

The January transfer window is now into its final fortnight, and the time is ticking down for players who are hoping for a move away from their current clubs.

Euro 2024 is a huge objective for many European footballers but without regular playing time, many risk missing out.

Below we look at seven players who need January transfers or else they risk not being selected for the Euros in June.

Kalvin Phillips (Man City)

Kalvin Phillips is surplus to requirements at City and wants to leave in January to ensure regular playing time for Euro 2024.

The midfielder was a key player for England at Euro 2020 and Gareth Southgate has still been picking him in squads since.

However, another six months on the bench will surely cost him a place at Euro 2024.

Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Ramsdale was Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper for two seasons and played an important role as the Gunners challenged Man City for the title last season.

However, manager Mikel Arteta controversially decided to sign a new number one last summer in the form of Brentford’s David Raya.

Ramsdale has had to watch on from the bench since and has now gone from challenging Jordan Pickford for the England goalkeeper jersey to risking missing out on the England squad.

Moise Kean (Juventus)

Moise Kean was seeing regular playing time this season and even displaced Dusan Vlahovic in the Juventus starting XI for a while.

However, an injury to Kean in December saw young wonderkid Kenan Yildiz receive a chance from Max Allegri, and the 18-year-old has exploded onto the scene.

So much so that Yildiz is now a first-team player and there are widespread reports Kean is surplus to requirements.

A number of clubs are interested in the attacker, and he may need a move in order to receive enough playing time to convince Italy manager Luciano Spalletti to take him to Euro 2024.

Wilfried Gnonto (Leeds)

Wilfried Gnonto desperately needs a transfer away from Leeds if he is to have any hope of going to Euro 2024.

Gnonto was already at a disadvantage following Leeds’ relegation to the Championship at the end of last season.

He tried to force a transfer away from Leeds in the summer was unable to. This season he has been a reserve, only generally coming off the bench.

There appears little chance of Gnonto going to the Euros unless he leaves Leeds and joins a decent-level club where he plays as a regular.

Anthony Martial (Man Utd)

Anthony Martial has not played for France since 2021 and it is easy to see why given his dismal performances for Man Utd in the last few seasons.

It has been clear for some time now that Martial needs a transfer away from Old Trafford in order to rescue not only his club career but also his international career.

With France boasting top class attackers like Kylian Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani, Marcus Thuram and Olivier Giroud, there is no hope of Martial going to the Euros unless he joins a new team and starts firing.

His contract at United expires in June and a Bosman Transfer then seems more likely.

Matthijs De Ligt (Bayern Munich)

Matthijs De Ligt's place in the Netherlands Euro 2024 squad is not at risk but his place in the starting XI is very much in doubt, unless he can move from Bayern.

De Ligt has fallen down the pecking order at Bayern and is now fourth choice centre back under Thomas Tuchel.

He is reported to be considering a move away from Bayern, with Man Utd linked to a January transfer.

With the Netherlands possessing an abundance of top centre backs, De Ligt finds himself at a crossroads just months from the Euros.
