Manchester United supporters were in disbelief after seeing the team for their game against Burnley this weekend, with Jonny Evans making his return to the starting line-up.

Eyebrows were raised when the veteran defender was signed on a short-term deal over the summer and it is perhaps an emphasis of United’s struggles this season that the 35-year-old is now starting for the club despite being considered an emergency backup.

Evans started his career at Old Trafford as a youngster but left to join West Brom in 2015 and established himself as a reliable Premier League defender at the Baggies and with Leicester.

But the Northern Irish international only made 13 Premier League appearances for Leicester last season as they were relegated and he has now found himself back in the mix at his former club.

Erik ten Hag has endured a host of injuries this season and Evans was forced into the line-up with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez out, while Raphael Varane is only fit enough for the bench.

United’s injury issues have been relentless and the need to play Evans caused some fans to laugh through the pain, with the fear of another negative result at newly-promoted Burnley heavy on the minds of the Red Devils.

United fans reach breaking point

United have picked up just two wins in their opening five league games and fans were seemingly getting used to the mediocrity, however the news of Evans starting left some supporters stunned at their decline.

Others were quick to point the finger at the Glazers, with the United owners poor management leaving Ten Hag underprepared despite their huge transfer outlay in recent years.
