Football has a habit of weaving remarkable, fascinating narratives through the relatively straightforward nature of professional sports.

Saturday’s Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City was little more than 22 men running around a grass pitch.

And yet Harry Kane made it so much more with some outstanding technique and a clear desire to show the English champions what they should have worked a little harder to sign last summer.

As if to wait until the moment the dramatic repercussion could be felt the most, the England international didn’t strike until the hour mark, when Son Heung-Min swung in a cross for Kane to head home and give Spurs the lead.

The towering striker then scored again 14 minutes later with a tremendous show of close control and finishing, but team mate Dejan Kulusevski was deemed offside in the build up. And yet Man City had once again been reminded of what they simply didn’t have in attack.

Even after Riyad Mahrez’s late penalty to level the scoring, Kane simply wasn’t done. And in the dying moments of the game the striker latched on to another cross from his Swedish team mate to plant a header into the bottom right corner.

Pep Guardiola had his head in his hands when the final whistle went and Man City were left to rue a match in which they simply couldn’t get close to Kane.

Why Kane could be set for Man Utd

However, while Saturday’s clash may be seen as Kane teaching Man City a lesson, it could just as easily be an audition for their cross-city rivals Manchester United, who remain linked with the England international and in desperate need of a striker this summer.

Marcus Rashford hasn’t quite developed into the talisman he once promised to be, Edinson Cavani will likely depart at the end of the season and there’s no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be able to lead the line for the Old Trafford side for the duration of the 2022/23 season.

As such, Man Utd will need a ready-made striker that can not only score goals but also come up with moments of magic to win high-stake games. And in the Premier League there are few players that tick both of those boxes as well as Kane.
