EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd plot €75m offer for Mateus Fernandes
Manchester United are planning on submitting an opening offer for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes in the coming days, FootballTransfers has been told.
The 21-year-old has emerged as a top target for Michael Carrick’s side following an excellent debut season at the London Stadium, and Man Utd are keen to bring him to Old Trafford this summer as they prepare for their first campaign back in the Champions League since 2023-24.
Casemiro will leave the Red Devils when his contract expires at the end of June and Manuel Ugarte has also been tipped to depart the club after falling down the pecking order following the appointment of Carrick in January.
An agreement has already been reached to sign Atalanta star Ederson this summer, but Man Utd also want to sign at least one other midfielder before the end of Deadline Day and we understand that Fernandes has been earmarked as a primary candidate for the role.
The Portugal midfielder, who has one senior cap for his country but was omitted from their World Cup squad, made 38 appearances for West Ham last season and he was one of their standout performers in a disappointing campaign that saw them relegated back down to the Championship for the first time since 2011.
Fernandes is expected to leave the club before the end of the summer window, amid significant transfer interest, and sources have informed FootballTransfers that Man Utd are planning on making a serious offer for the 21-year-old in the coming days.
We understand that Man Utd’s first bid for Fernandes is likely to be in the region of €75 million (£65m), although this is below West Ham’s current valuation of the player.
Man Utd have also been heavily linked with a move for Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson in recent months, but arch-rivals Manchester City are currently the frontrunners to sign him and the Red Devils are now keen to intensify their pursuit of Fernandes as they ramp up preparations ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Man Utd confirm summer exits
Man Utd have officially confirmed that Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho will depart the club upon the expiration of their contracts in July, while academy stars Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will also leave.
In addition, Rasmus Hojlund has completed a permanent move to Napoli for €44m following a successful loan spell with the Serie A giants last season.
Meanwhile, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee, Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and the aforementioned Ugarte have also been tipped to depart Old Trafford before the summer window slams shut on 1 September.
