Lionel Messi is “excited to begin a new chapter” in his career after completing a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Up until a week ago the Argentina international was expected to resign with Barcelona and remain there for the foreseeable future.

However, due to the club’s grave financial situation and what the Catalan side believe to be unfair restrictions imposed by the Spanish league body, Messi was unable to sign a new deal with the club he had played his football with for his entire career.

After a tearful farewell on Sunday, Messi then quickly made the move to Paris and was confirmed as a new PSG player on Tuesday after signing a two-year deal.

And while many football fans around the world are still coming to terms with the news, Messi has expressed his delight at the move and is excited to get started.

'PSG match my football ambitions'

“I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain. Everything about the club matches my football ambitions,” said Messi on the club website.

“I know how talented the squad and the coaching staff are here. I am determined to help build something special for the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes.”

Messi has become the fifth major signing of the summer for PSG – and the fourth to arrive on a free transfer.

And following the club’s failure to win the Champions League last season, PSG CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi couldn’t be more happy about signing Messi up for the new campaign.

“I am delighted that Lionel Messi has chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain and we are proud to welcome him and his family to Paris,” said the club boss.

“He has made no secret of his desire to continue competing at the very highest level and winning trophies, and naturally our ambition as a club is to do the same.

“The addition of Leo to our world class squad continues a very strategic and successful transfer window for the club.

“Led by our outstanding coach and his staff, I look forward to the team making history together for our fans all around the world.”
