CONFIRMED: Courtois signs new deal as Real Madrid refuse special treatment for goalkeeper
Real Madrid’s squad continues to build nicely ahead of the 2025/26 season, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois committing his future to the Bernabeu side by signing a new contract.
Courtois has signed a one-year contract extension with Los Blancos, meaning he is now tied to the club until the end of June 2027, Marca reports.
There had been some doubt over the future of the Belgian at Real Madrid, particularly early in the transfer window when Xabi Alonso’s side were linked with a potential move for Joan Garcia, who ultimately left Espanyol to join Barcelona.
In recent weeks, there was speculation Courtois might even get a longer extension than the 12 months he has been awarded. Rumours suggested that he could be handed an optional one-year deal based on his playing time, potentially keeping him in the Spanish capital until 2028.
Marca states that this will not be the case. Real Madrid have an internal rule that players over the age of 32 are only given a contract extension with a maximum of one year and they are not prepared to break that for Courtois.
Courtois aims to retire at Real Madrid
Prior to the FIFA Club World Cup, Courtois was adamant that he was ready to commit his future to Real Madrid.
Speaking to the media, he said: “I hope I can renew. I’m very happy at Real Madrid, playing here is a dream and every year that passes is another dream. I’m at the club’s complete disposal, they know I want to stay here... and hopefully retire here. But now it’s time to prove myself on the pitch. The rest will be easy to resolve.”
Since joining Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has played 228 matches for Los Blancos and is set to be a big part of Xabi Alonso’s plans for the 2025/26 campaign.
