The relationship between Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid has already hit a snag before the PSG striker is even officially a member of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad – at least according to a report in Spain.

Mbappe has reportedly agreed to move to Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer, with indications from certain sources that the player has even signed his contract, yet there is tension between the parties.

AS suggests that the 25-year-old France striker wants to play in the Olympic Games, which take place in his hometown of Paris in early August. However, this clashes with Real Madrid’s tour of the USA.

One of PSG’s main arguments when Mbappe signed his contract with them in 2022 was that they would allow him to play in the competition, which comes hot on the heels of Euro 2024. It has even been suggested that Mbappe could get the honour of being his country’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony.

France, meanwhile, are seeking to treat the competition extremely seriously, with three of their leading stars in the form of Antoine Griezmann, Raphael Varane and Mbappe touted strongly to be named as their permitted overage players in what is primarily an U23 competition.

And Mbappe has hinted at his desire to play.

“Everyone knows that I have always dreamed of playing in the Olympic Games. Afterwards, it doesn't depend on me, there are many parameters at play,” he said.

Why Real Madrid don’t want Mbappe to play in the Olympics

As the competition is run by the IOC and not FIFA, clubs are not permitted to allow their stars to leave for the competition, leaving the door open for Real Madrid to refuse any request from Mbappe to play in the tournament.

This could be done because there is no type of compensation paid to clubs if their players were to be injured while on international duty here. If a player is injured during a competition that is overseen by FIFA, there is insurance.

On top of this, there is the issue of rest. The European Championship runs from 14 June until 14 July, while the Olympic tournament goes from 24 July to 9 August. This would leave Mbappe without a summer break and, crucially for Real Madrid, largely without a chance to integrate with his new teammates.

This tricky issue is hardly the best way for Real Madrid and Mbappe to start their new relationship, with at least one set to be left disgruntled.
