Rangers agree deal for €14m Skov Olsen in Cerny repeat
Rangers are closing in on their second January transfer window signing, with Andreas Skov Olsen set to arrive at the Glasgow giants in a repeat of the move that brought Vaclav Cerny to Scotland 18 months ago.
Danny Rohl’s side have already snapped up Tochi Chukwuani from Sturm Graz and now are close to adding the 26-year-old Dane to their ranks.
Skov Olsen, who plays in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, is set to arrive on a loan deal that will see him remain at Ibrox until the end of the season. Crucially, this agreement will also contain an option to buy, Sky Sports reports.
Closing in on second signing
Rangers are seeking to maintain the momentum that they have picked up under Rohl by backing the manager in the transfer window, with Skov Olsen’s arrival set to be a particular coup.
The winger, who is capable of playing on either flank, moved to Wolfsburg for €14m last January after a highly successful spell at Club Brugge, where he had scored eight and created four in 19 matches for the Belgian side in the first half of last term.
He is set to undergo a medical at Ibrox before completing his move.
What can Rangers expect from Skov Olsen?
During his final stint in Belgium, Skov Olsen excelled as a wide playmaker. His passing was strong but equally he impressed in one-on-one situations, being one of the best dribblers in the Jupiler League.
He was also proactive and had a habit of helping his side win the ball high up the field, while he was also strong when it came to slowing or stopping opposing counterattacks.
The Dane struggled to show these qualities in Germany but has notably retained a high shot-creating action statistic (4.52 per 90).
Rohl will hope he can maintain this figure while regaining the confidence in the rest of his game in a repeat of the move that brought Vaclav Cerny to Ibrox last season.
Cerny was a roaring success on loan at Rangers from Wolfsburg last season, such that a permanent deal would likely have been agreed had it been financial possible for the Ibrox club.
Rangers spending to fuel title push
After an ambitious but ultimately failed summer transfer campaign, Rangers are back and investing heavily in the market this time around. Rohl has dragged the Gers to within three points of Hearts at the top of the Premiership, and with 16 games of the campaign remaining, they have a very real shot of the title.
They have already signed midfielder Tochi Chukuwani for €4.6m while left-back Tuur Rommens is set to arrive from Westerlo in a deal worth around €3.5m.
