Manchester United are reportedly ready to renew their interest in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane next summer.

With his contract set to expire in 2022, the Frenchman’s value is heading in the right direction as far as those at Old Trafford are concerned.

And having spent the last nine years at the Santiago Bernaebu winning every trophy in sight, Varane could well be up for taking on a new challenge in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has also previously been described as a boyhood Manchester United fan, another factor that could put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in the driving seat.

  • Despite Varane’s considerable experience, the Red Devils would be getting a player still in his prime were they able to strike a deal.

Varane has won a higher percentage of duels (77%) and aerial challenges (85%) than any other defender who has played over 500 minutes in La Liga this season.

He has also won 80% of his tackles (joint-fourth best in the division) and made 2.4 interceptions per 90 minutes (third best).

While he may have put through his own net twice this term, the France international remains one of Europe’s premier centre-backs.

A move for Varane could represent good value for United, even at the £70m pricetag currently being touted.
