Sergio Aguero is in line to return to Manchester City just weeks after retiring at Barcelona due to a medical problem.

Aguero, 33, complained of chest issues during a Primera Division encounter against Alaves and was replaced during that game.

It was initially recommended that he take three months away from professional football to allow the condition to be studied, but during that time it became apparent that he would not be fit enough to play at the elite level once again.

Having joined Barcelona in the summer, he managed only five appearances for the club, with his sole goal coming in a 2-1 Clasico defeat against Real Madrid.

During a press conference in December, Aguero said a tearful goodbye to the professional game, having turned out previously for Atletico Madrid before spending a decade at Manchester City, where he became a legend.

Aguero set to bounce back

According to reports in The Sun, Aguero is in line to go back to Man City in an ambassadorial role, with the Etihad outfit ready to open their arms to the Argentine who was such a crowd favourite at the club.

He will be given a non-playing role alongside fellow Premier League champions Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott.

Aguero, who will have a statue built for him outside of Man City’s home, is presently on holiday in Uruguay and the exact nature of the role he will be given is as yet unclear.

His story comes in contrast to that of Christian Eriksen, who collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland.

Eriksen required emergency on-field treatment from his team-mates and had a pacemaker installed that made it impossible for him to feature for Inter due to regulations in Italy.

Nevertheless, he has been released and is being linked to Ajax, Monaco and several Premier League clubs.

Aguero was not so lucky, but Manchester City are clearly intent on ensuring the legend has a place in football should he wish it.
