Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could be on his way back to Spain at the end of the season according to reports in England.

The Argentine striker enjoyed five years at Atletico Madrid, where he played over 150 games for the club before signing for the Premier League giants in 2011 for a fee reported to be around £35 million.

However, according to a report in The Times, Barcelona plan on luring the striker back to La Liga this summer if Joan Laporta becomes the club’s president.

So could Aguero be on the verge of drawing a line under his time in England and potentially spending his remaining years as a top player in Spain?

Can Barcelona afford Sergio Aguero?

The most pressing matter with Aguero’s situation at Man City this season is that the senior striker’s current contract is set to expire at the end of this current league campaign.

As things stand, the 32-year-old talisman will not only be able to leave the club after June 30 for absolutely free, but he’ll also have been able to speak to other clubs about potential contract offers since early January.

That means Barcelona may have already reached out to Aguero to gauge how interested he may be in returning to Spain next season. And with no contract offer in sight, it seems as though that could be a distinct possibility.

However, that doesn’t mean the Man City star already has his heart set on a move away from England this summer.

While Barcelona may be interested in the striker, there’s currently no reason to believe the Spanish giants could afford Aguero’s current wages.

According to reports in England, Aguero currently earns £260,000 per week at Man City. And while Barcelona do have players on that kind of money at the moment, it’s almost certain that the club will have to dramatically cut its own wage bill next season.

As such, unless Aguero can agree to a major pay deduction, it’s unlikely that Barca would be willing to jeapordise their future finances on a player of his age next season.
