Chelsea transfer battle for €45m star EXPLODES into life
AS Roma and AC Milan are going head-to-head for the signature of Chelsea outcast Axel Disasi, according to Italian media.
The former France international is all but guaranteed to leave Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window. Disasi was part of Chelsea's 'Bomb Squad' in the summer but did not manage to secure a move.
His former club Monaco attempted to loan him, but Chelsea refused to entertain a temporary departure, given the limited number of available international loan spots.
Disasi was recently allowed to return to first-team training. However, that has not gone hand in hand with a return to matchday squads. The 27-year-old has yet to be involved in any senior squad this term, and this is unlikely to change.
AC Milan recently began showing a concrete interest in Disasi. The Rossoneri have a history of signing Chelsea players, with the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Christopher Nkunku making the switch from West London to Lombardy.
AS Roma enter Disasi race
According to Tuttomercatoweb, AS Roma have now also joined the race for Disasi. Sporting director Ricky Massara has made "insistent moves in recent hours," the report claims.
Chelsea want to get rid of Disasi, but they would have to accept a significant loss on their €45 million investment. At present, the outlet expects that it will be difficult for the versatile defender to secure a permanent move.
Nevertheless, Roma's interest is genuine. Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is not entirely happy with his squad, although the Giallorossi's main priority will be bolstering the attack in January. They sit fourth in Serie A, but only seven teams have scored fewer goals than them.
If Disasi can prove to be a "low-cost" option, Roma will look to pounce on his availability, even if his signing is not an absolute necessity. He would massively boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League, which is the objective this season.
