Napoli are set to make a contract offer to Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Danish striker is on the outside looking in at Old Trafford, having gone from starting striker to surplus to requirements in the matter of just a few months.

The signing of Benjamin Sesko has pushed Hojlund to the fringes of Ruben Amorim's squad, and the Portuguese head coach omitted him entirely from the team for the opening day defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

This was the straw that broke the camel's back for a player who had initially wanted to stay and fight for his place at Man Utd. Hojlund has now accepted that he needs to leave, but a proposed move to AC Milan hasn't come to fruition.

The Rossoneri offered a loan with an option to purchase him next summer, but Hojlund wants to feel backed and be part of a long-term project, so he will only accept a temporary move if it includes an obligation to buy. The Serie A giants are instead set to sign Victor Boniface.

Napoli making Hojlund progress

Napoli have also been exploring a move for Hojlund in recent days following a long-term injury sustained by Romelu Lukaku, and Fabrizio Romano reports that the Italian champions are making progress in talks with Man Utd.

The transfer insider adds that Napoli are set to present a formal contract offer to Hojlund in a bid to agree personal terms with him. The necessary conditions for a club-to-club agreement have already been spelt out by Man Utd.

The Red Devils want at least €45 million, and ideally €50m, for Hojlund, either right now as part of a permanent deal or next summer after an initial loan move. This figure includes a potential loan fee, with Milan previously agreeing to pay €5m-€6m for the season in their failed deal.

RB Leipzig and Newcastle have also been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, but it looks as though the former Atalanta youngster will return to Italy this summer.
