Everton fans would have breathed an almighty sight of relief on Saturday when their side picked up its first win under new manager Frank Lampard.

While other Premier League sides faced lower league opponents in this weekend’s FA Cup, the Merseyside giants were tasked with getting the better of an impressive Brentford side.

To the delight of the Everton fans and their new manager, that’s exactly what they did, when a first half goal from Yerry Mina was accompanied by three more in the second half from Richarlison, Mason Holgate and then Andros Townsend.

But how much can Everton fans rely on a win in the FA Cup to determine where their club will go under their new manager? Unfortunately not a lot. And to get a proper reading on Lampard as a manager we’re better going back to how he did at Chelsea.

So how good is Lampard as a Premier League manager and what can we take from his two-year spell as Chelsea manager and apply to this Everton team?

Lampard’s record at Chelsea

While Lampard was of course in charge of Derby County before he made the move to Chelsea, Everton fans will likely only be interested in his record in the Premier League. So that’s what we’ll focus on.

Over the course of 57 league games in charge of Chelsea, Lampard’s side won 28, drew 11 and lost 18. That gives him a points-per-game ratio of 1.67. If that’s roughly what he could emulate at Everton, it would suggest the Merseyside club could perhaps expect a points tally of around 63 points, which would put the club in contention for European spots in most seasons.

However, there’s a reason Chelsea cut Lampard short and brought in Thomas Tuchel instead. The manager’s average of 1.67 was well below what was expected at Stamford Bridge, which is evident from the fact that Tuchel now averages 2.15 per league game with largely the same squad.

While Lampard’s points return at Chelsea may be just what Everton want, Tuchel has since proved that the English manager didn’t get anywhere near the best out of the players he had to hand. And, as such, could underperform at Everton as he did at Stamford Bridge.
