Celtic make Wilfried Nancy sack statement
Celtic have commented on the future of manager Wilfried Nancy just four matches into his tenure in Glasgow.
The Parkhead club have lost all four games that the former Columbus Crew boss has overseen, resulting in pressure mounting rapidly on his shoulders.
Nancy had seen the Hoops lose to Hearts, Roma and St Mirren prior to a trip to Tannadice to face Dundee United on Wednesday. A first-half strike from Daizen Maeda seemed to put Celtic on course for victory, but the hosts hit a quick-fire double in the second period to turn the game around and plunge the Glasgow giants further into crisis.
'Absolutely solid behind Nancy'
Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson was forced to make a statement on Nancy’s future at the club, providing the boss with a vote of confidence less than a fortnight after he took charge.
“We are absolutely solid behind Wilfried Nancy,” Nicholson said.
“We know where we want to go and our job is to support Nancy to take us where we want to get to.
“I met with him this week to discuss recruitment in January, and also looking ahead to the summer transfer window.
“We have a project to support here, and we are excited about where we are going to get to. But it’s going to take time. It is still just 2 weeks since Wilfried Nancy’s appointment.”
Nancy’s terrible start at Celtic
Nancy had been thrown into the Celtic job at a nightmare time. Martin O’Neill had strung together seven wins from eight as a caretaker boss, and while performances were generally unimpressive, the Northern Irishman had made it clear he was only interested in positive results.
The new manager has immediately tried to implement a new system that does not suit the players available to him, while he has done so at a crucial juncture of the season.
Celtic’s Europa League hopes hang in the balance after the loss to Roma, the League Cup has gone with the defeat to St Mirren, and Premiership losses against Hearts and Dundee United leave the champions trailing the Edinburgh club by six points, albeit with a game in hand.
Fans were audibly heard chanting for Nancy to leave during the Dundee United loss, further heightening tension around a club where the support is already in open warfare against the board.
If Nancy is to survive, he will have to turn his situation around rapidly.
